As I am sure that you are aware the 20/20 is: 20 minutes of bible reading, 20 minutes of praying, and 20 minutes of journaling. What I can’t figure out is why it isn’t called 20/20/20? Whatevers. Part of today’s reading is from Acts chapter 4.
Proper Context
Peter and John were arrested because they were doing bad things like healing in the name of Jesus and telling people about Jesus in the temple. This torched some of the leaders off so they threw them in prison. The next day they were brought before the council of high priests and were asked to account for themselves. And they did. As a matter of fact they were “filled with the Holy Spirit” and answered boldly about what they were doing.
Scripture
“Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13 (NASB)
Observation
I’m thinking that they already new that these guys were disciples of Jesus. When they spoke boldly in front of them it caused them to understand that because of their relationship with Jesus they were enabled to speak as they did. Peter & John were not necessarily inherently bold. Through the power of the Holy Spirit they were emboldened to speak with force and confidence.
Application
Peter & John were pretty educated by this point, just not officially educated within the system. They had spent a great deal of time with each other and with Jesus learning. They were disciples, trying to be Christ like in everything that they did. Their eductation and knowledge didn’t make them bold, it was only through the Holy Spirit that they were emboldened. You only get the Holy Spirit boldness when you have a relationship with Jesus. If you don’t you’re on your own…all alone, just you, nobody to fall back on but yourself,…I’m quite certain that I am powerless without a relationship with Christ.
Prayer
Thanks for the assurance of being there with me when I’m in a pinch. You’re welcome to embolden me in the future if the opportunity presents itself.
