Deuteronomy 10-12
Mark 16

Scripture

17 These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages.[e] 18 They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.” (Mk 16:17-18)

8 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind, or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. 9 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. (Deut 5:8-9) (From March 7th)

Observation

I have heard of churches that handle serpents as part of their “worship”.  I am curious, so I did a little research on them.snake

  • A Tennessee woman died after being bitten by a rattlesnake during a service in 1995. Her husband died three years later when he was bitten by a snake in northeastern Alabama. (1) They left 5 orphans who were left in the custody of grandparents, who also attend serpent-handling churches.
  • [Junior G. McCormick](a pastor) explains that, for him, handling snakes is simply following the gospel to the letter. “Other folks don’t do this because their churches don’t believe, or it’s just something they’re scared of,” he said. “They come to that scripture but want to jump over that part because it’s a deadly thing.” (2)
  • An estimated 75 people have died in the United States from handling snakes during religious services in the past 80 years. (3)  Many more have been bitten and suffered deformities and severe illness.  What is their response?  “I don’t believe it’s God’s will that people get bit. Maybe the Holy Spirit wasn’t upon them at the time” (4)
  • 40 churches in the southeastern United States that actively practice snake handling.  They also drink poison.  I’d like to know how many sick have been healed in these churches.  That is part of this out-of-context scripture also.

Application

The Bible is the inspired Word of God.  I believe that with all my heart.  Sometimes passages are difficult to understand.   In reading Genesis through Deuteronomy, there are many things that happened that I don’t understand.  They are hard to grasp; such as God requiring the Israelites to kill all of the women and boys of their enemies.  I don’t fixate on these scriptures.  Taken in context and all together they show me that God is a God of Laws and of forgiveness.  They point to Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice.  I knew a kid in highschool who fixated on several Old Testament passages and said that he couldn’t worship a God like that.  Looking at the serpent-handling churches also shows the destruction of taking passages out of context.  Jesus said that people will know we are His servents by the love we have for each other.  Where is the love in allowing a fellow church member to die; not calling 911 because they must not have had enough faith?  Or leaving your children orphans?  Does this draw people to God?  Did Jesus do this kind of circus act during His ministry?

Prayer

Lord God, I am always in danger of taking Your holy words out of context.  No one is immune.  As long as You are my focus and my desire is to develop an intimate love relationship with You, I know that You will teach me what I need to know.  You will reveal to me the meaning of Your words in due season.  I pray for those who have been seduced and blinded that they would see You as You truly are.

Deuteronomy 5,6
Psalm 43
Mark 14

Scripture

15 Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, but the Lord your God brought you out with his strong hand and powerful arm. That is why the Lord your God has commanded you to rest on the Sabbath day. (Deut 5:15)

Observation

The Sabbath wasn’t just a day of rest, it was a day to remember that the Israelites were not slaves anymore.  By being able to NOT work, they were reminded that no one was behind them with a whip telling them they must work.  It was a physical reminder of what God had done for them.  It is interesting that by the time of Jesus’ day, the Jews were slaves to the Law of the Sabbath.  Jesus Himself said “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.” (Mk 2:27)  The Jews had totally missed the reason, as expressly stated in the 10 comandments, for the day of rest.  They were to be reminded they were FREE, but they made themselves slaves to the very law that reminded them they were free.

Application

Since my last post on the Sabbath, I have been trying very hard to keep at least one day where I don’t have ANY obligations.  It is tough.  Does that mean I am still a slave to my circumstances?  Jesus did not take me out of Egypt, per se, but He did free me from my sins and the Law of Death.  I am no longer a slave to that law, but because I find it so difficult to have a free day without any obligations, does that mean I am a slave to my obligations?  Perhaps.

Prayer

Jesus, thank-you so much for freeing me from the slavery of the law of sin and death.  You made it possible for me to have a day of rest.  Help me to take the blessing you have given me.  Help me to be reminded that I am no longer a slave to anyone but You.

Deuteronomy 3-4
Psalm 36
Mark 13

Scripture

11 But when you are arrested and stand trial, don’t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.(Mk 13:11)

Observation

There will be times when we will have to “stand trial” for our beliefs.  In America today, we don’t really have to worry about being arrested and imprisoned or executed, but we do stand trial before our peers.  In our age of “tolerance” we generally don’t get asked outright why we believe in Jesus because it would seem intolerant.  But we do face “trials” everyday, however.  Non-believing friends may watch you and wonder:

  • Why you don’t just say your kid is under five to get them into the movies cheaper, no one will know the difference.
  • Why don’t you chart you gave that med, no one will know you didn’t really give it.
  • Why do you claim your fish cleaning money on your taxes, no one knows how much you made.
  • Why you just took that extra $5 back to the cashier, it was his mistake, not yours.
  • Why you pick up someone else’ litter, you didn’t put it there.
  • Why you go to church every Sunday, you’ve got so much else on your plate.

We are on trial everyday, every moment, for what we believe.

Application

We do not need to worry about what we will say or do.  The Holy Spirit, who lives within us will speak for us.  Perhaps this won’t be a verbal speech, but an action.  When Jesus lives in our lives and we spend daily time with Him, He guides our actions and words.  We don’t need to worry about how we will come accross to others.  And when we do fall short, we ask for forgiveness and God covers it in grace.

Prayer

Lord, be with me always.  Thank you for your Holy Spirit and the assurance that I don’t need to worry about what to say or do.  Let our relationship grow stronger each day so that every action, thought, and word are filtered through Your grace.

Scripture

“There, in a foreign land, you will worship idols made from wood and stone—gods that neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.  But from there you will search again for the Lord your God. And if you search for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him.” Deuteronomy 4:28-9 (NLT)

Observation

james: “But, but, God! I don’t want to worship idols, I just want to worship you!”

GOD: “Are you kidding me? Wake up dude. What about the idol you made out of that Twinkie? Have you noticed how many times you let your job, your toys, your selfish pursuits, come before me?”

james: “That Twinkie? What in the…world…are you talking about?”

GOD: “James, look, the world is full of idols, anything that you depend on more than me can become an idol.”

james: “Hah, you’re right, what about the idea that we can be our own gods and create our own destiny…I’m sure you’ve seen all of those self help books”.

GOD: “Yes, I’ve noticed, let’s not even go there right now. I just want each of you to know that I love you and I want you back. If you search for me with all of your heart and soul, you will find me”

james: “Sweet, I love you too. Hey look, a new Land Rover Discovery, six cylnders, 4 wheel drive…”

GOD: “Knock, knock, knock. I’m standing here knocking! I just want you to seek me first and put me before everything.”

GOD: “…James? you spelled cylinders wrong, James? Hello?”

Application

james: “Hi God, I got distracted for a second. It’s so easy to fall away and start putting things before you.”

GOD: “I never said it was going to be easy did I? I’m not going to brainwash you into seeking me first before everything. I want you to seek me first because you love me. I want you to want to know me. ”

james: “And I want me to want to seek you first too! I would love to know you more! I think consistently seeking you in the morning before everything else is a great start. It’s becoming a habit, and I really enjoy spending time reading the bible…most days…and spending time with you.”

GOD: “It’s working out pretty good isn’t it? I love spending time with you too!”

james: “I love you God”

GOD: “and I love you”

Prayer

God, thank you for your patience and un-dying love that you have for us. Thank you for loving us and giving us a chance to know you more. Help me become more consistent in pursuit of you.

Deuteronomy 1-2
Mark 12

Scripture

2 Normally it takes only eleven days to travel from Mount Sinai[a] to Kadesh-barnea, going by way of Mount Seir. 3 But forty years after the Israelites left Egypt, on the first day of the eleventh month,[b] Moses addressed the people of Israel, telling them everything the Lord had commanded him to say.(Deut 1:2-3)

When we arrived at Kadesh-barnea, 20 I said to you, ‘You have now reached the hill country of the Amorites that the Lord our God is giving us. 21 Look! He has placed the land in front of you. Go and occupy it as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. Don’t be afraid! Don’t be discouraged!’(Deut 1:19-21)

Observation

Wow, it took 40 years to travel what should have taken 11 days! When they got there and God said, “Here it is, go get it,” they didn’t trust that God would give it to them.  When God said, “Well, okay then, turn around,” they decided to try it anyway and lost big-time.

Application

Do you suppose that God takes so long in answering His promises to us because He knows that if he were to hand it to us before we are ready, we would end up loosing big-time?  It’s in the journey that he prepares us to be able to handle His promises.  The journey is so important.  Step by step and day by day.  I also think that if they hadn’t of sent out scouts and just followed God, they wouldn’t have see what was waiting for them and God would have taken care of it as He said He would.  Sometimes it’s prudent to look ahead, other times we need to jump off the cliff and trust that God will do the impossible and allow us to fly.

Prayer

God, teach me to trust You each day.  Help me to embrace the journey.  Help me to just keep moving forward as You tell me too and not look at the impossibilities ahead of me.  I know that I can do all things through You who give me strength.
