Scripture
“But the people defiantly pushed ahead toward the hill country, even though neither Moses nor the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant left the camp. Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in those hills came down and attacked them and chased them back as far as Hormah.” Numbers 14:44-45 (NLT)
Observation
Reading about how the Israelites acted before God and his anointed is reminiscent of how I acted before my parents, and how my children act before Sheryl and I. Subsequently It’s how we still act before God. It’s a flaw of human nature to constantly want what you cannot have. It’s not until we fix our eyes on what God wants for us that we can walk into the blessings that he has in store.
GOD: “James, if you do XYZ I will give you a piece of cake”
james: “But God, I don’t want to do XYZ”.
GOD: “Okay then take this bran muffin”
james: “But God! I want a piece of cake…even two!”
GOD: “I want you to have a piece of cake…even the entire cake…but you need to do XYZ”
james: “If you loved me enough you would give me a piece of cake”
GOD: “I love you more than you would ever know”
james: “Can I have a couple cakes then? If you loved me then you would give me cakes”
GOD: “I want you to be obedient so that I can bless you. But since you want to be difficult just go to bed with nothing.”
james: “BUT GOD!! I’m hungry, can I have a bran muffin?”
God wanted to bless the Israelites but they just didn’t get it. Today we have a new promise from God. God gave Jesus an inheritance (cake and more) and he wants to share it with us!
Application
God wants to know us today. In fact we don’t even have to kill animals on an altar. Through Christ’s sacrifice we have been reconciled to God by accepting his Son who was the ultimate sacrifice. “Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.” Romans 5:19 (NLT).
“So what about the cake?” I hear you ask. God wants to bless each of us with a big piece of cake. In fact he has a heavenly bakery with my name on it. The transforming power of Christ makes you want more than an earthly cake. God is much better than cake, If I can’t sell you on that then think of God as a big piece of cake with extra frosting.
Bottom line God knows that we like cake. If we seek God first he will give us everything that we need. Matthew 6:33 says that “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
Prayer
God thank you for your promise of eternal life with you. Without you we would be nothing more than a bunch of bratty kids who are selfish. Thank you for the things that you give us, and thank you for taking care of our needs and giving us cake.
Help me seek first your kingdom in everything that I do.

Cake is your thing, James. I want Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked with extra marshmallow cream. God, can I have extra marshmallow cream without getting fat? Now THAT would be a blessing!
Great post, James. I love you.
Well, I’ve already been more partial to apple pie. In the case of the post I think that cake is a little more inclusive.
